What Causes A Leak Or Burst Pipe
The most common cause of burst pipework in the home is brittleness.
This could be due to extremes of temperature causing the pipe to expand and contract over many years.
For pipes outside the home, the surrounding soil expands and contracts putting pressure on the pipe which causes the pipe damage and cracks.
The second cause is simply old age. Pipes normally burst at their weakest points (usually at the joint) and as the vast majority of pipework is hidden under the floor or above the ceiling, it could be some time before it’s noticed.
What Should You Do If You Have A Burst Pipe?
The first thing to do is to turn off the water supply. Underneath your sink, there maybe small taps that you can turn off to stop the water to a burst flexi hose. Or you may need to turn off the water at the main meter.
