Identifying Sewer Pipe Problems in the Sutherland Shire

A sewage smell in the laundry, a gurgle out of the shower drain, a patch of lawn that stays green through a dry week. Around Kirrawee, Gymea and the older streets of the Sutherland Shire, that is usually the sewer line telling you something is wrong before it blocks properly. Here’s how to read each sign.

Signs Your Sewer Line Is Broken or Blocked

A broken sewer line rarely fails without warning. It gives you a smell, a sound, a slow drain or a wet patch first. Five signs come up again and again, and the one that matters most is how many fixtures are affected at once.

A Sewage Smell Around the Drains or in the Yard

A sealed sewer line shouldn’t smell. When you can smell sewage in the bathroom, the laundry or along the side of the house, gas is escaping through a crack, a failed joint or a dry trap. It often gets stronger after heavy rain, when the ground is saturated.

Several Fixtures Draining Slowly at the Same Time

One slow basin is a blocked waste under that basin. A slow shower, a slow toilet and a slow kitchen sink together is a different problem, because everything in the house runs into the same sewer line. When the whole house slows at once, the restriction is downstream of all of it.

Gurgling From the Toilet or the Shower Drain

Gurgling is air being dragged back through the water in the trap, because the sewer line can’t breathe past the blockage. You’ll often hear it in the shower when someone flushes the toilet. Act on it early. The blockage is still partial at that point.

Sewage Backing Up Through the Lowest Drain in the House

Sewage comes back up at the lowest point it can find, normally the overflow relief gully outside or the laundry floor waste. That gully is designed to do exactly that, so the sewage goes into the yard instead of through your floor. If it’s spilling, stop running water in the house and ring us.

A Patch of Lawn That Stays Green or Soggy

A leaking sewer pipe waters and feeds the ground above it. If one strip of lawn is greener than the rest, or stays soft after the rest of the yard has dried out, look at where the sewer line runs. On a lot of Shire blocks it tracks down the side path.

Who Is Responsible for the Sewer Pipe on Your Property

The owner is, and that surprises people. Sydney Water’s guidance for licensed plumbers states that “the property owner is responsible for their connection to our wastewater system (the point of connection)”, and that the owner is also “responsible for clearing any tree roots that enter the junction at the point of connection, and any damage to the junction” (Sydney Water, Responsibility for repairs, retrieved 16 September 2026).

So the pipe from the house to that junction is yours to clear and yours to repair. In a strata building the split runs between common property and the lot, which is why we handle strata and body corporate drainage as its own thing. If you’re not sure which side of the line your blockage sits on, the camera settles it.

How a CCTV Drain Inspection Finds the Fault

We put a camera down the sewer line and watch the pipe on a screen. A CCTV drain inspection shows the cause, the depth and the distance from the access point, so the repair is aimed at one spot instead of dug for at three. You see the same footage we do.

If the camera finds roots, the hydro jet cuts them out and washes the pipe clean, then we run the camera again to look at the pipe underneath. That second look is the one that matters. Clearing the roots gets the toilet flushing tonight, but the crack that let them in is still there.

Repair the Sewer Pipe or Replace It?

It comes down to what the camera shows: how much of the sewer line is damaged, what the pipe is made of, and whether the damage sits in one section or runs along it. Four things decide it.

Cracks and Broken Sections in the Sewer Pipe

A crack in one length of pipe, from age, roots or ground movement, can usually be sealed from the inside. Pipe relining puts a new lining through the damaged section and cures it in place, so the driveway and the garden stay where they are. We do our relining in house.

Old Clay and Cast Iron Sewer Pipes

Plenty of Sutherland Shire homes still run on the original earthenware or cast iron. Clay pipes are laid in short lengths, so the line has a joint at every connection, and every joint is a way in for roots. If the line is failing at joint after joint, relining the whole run beats patching it twice a year.

Tree Roots in the Sewer Line

Tree roots are one of the most common causes we get called out for in the Shire. They find moisture through a hairline crack, then thicken inside the pipe until the flow stops. Cutting them out without sealing the crack buys you a year at best, so root damage normally ends in relining.

Corrosion and Misaligned Pipe Joints

Cast iron corrodes from the inside and loses its shape. Where ground movement has pulled joints apart or dropped one section below the next, waste sits in the dip instead of running through. A pipe that has lost its fall or its structure needs replacing, and the footage shows which one you have.

How do I know if my sewer line is broken?

Look for more than one sign at once. A sewage smell, gurgling drains, several fixtures draining slowly together, sewage at the overflow gully, or a green soggy strip of lawn all point at the sewer line rather than one blocked fixture. One sign alone can be a local blockage. Two or three together is the main line.

Who pays to fix a broken sewer pipe in NSW?

The property owner. Sydney Water states that the owner is responsible for their connection to the wastewater system at the point of connection, so the pipework from the house to that junction is private. Past the junction, in the main, it’s Sydney Water’s. Strata is different again: the NSW Government puts “plumbing in boundary walls and under the floor” with the owners corporation, and “plumbing in internal walls and fixtures” with the lot owner (NSW Government, Repairs and maintenance in strata, retrieved 16 September 2026).

Can I clear a blocked sewer drain myself?

You can legally try a plunger, a hand snake or an enzyme cleaner, and on a light blockage that sometimes does it. What you can’t do is tell whether the pipe underneath is cracked. If it clears and comes back within a few months, roots or a broken section are the reason, and that needs a camera rather than another bottle of drain cleaner.

What does a CCTV drain inspection show?

It shows the inside of the sewer line on a screen: the blockage, what caused it, the condition of the pipe wall and joints, and how far along the run the fault sits. That tells us whether the line needs a clean, a relining or a replacement, and it means we dig in one place if we dig at all.
