Blocked Sewer FAQs

Common questions about blocked sewers answered by Sydney drainage experts

Common signs include multiple drains backing up at once, gurgling sounds from toilets or drains, sewage odors, water pooling in your yard, or toilets that won’t flush. If more than one fixture is affected, it’s usually a sewer blockage rather than a single drain issue.

Tree roots are the most common cause in Sydney, especially in older properties with terracotta pipes. Other causes include flushed wipes, grease buildup, collapsed pipes, ground movement, or foreign objects. We use CCTV cameras to identify the exact cause and location.

Yes. Tree roots seek moisture and nutrients from sewer pipes. They enter through tiny cracks or joints, then grow inside the pipe until they create a complete blockage. Figs, willows, and camphor laurels are particularly aggressive. Once roots are in, they’ll keep growing unless the pipe is relined or replaced.

Sewer clearing typically costs $250-$600 depending on the blockage location and severity. Simple blockages near the house are cheaper. Blockages deep in your sewer main or caused by tree roots may require jetting or relining. We provide upfront quotes after camera inspection.

Only if the underlying issue is addressed. If your sewer is blocked by tree roots or collapsed pipes, clearing it provides temporary relief but the problem will return. We recommend CCTV inspection to identify damage, then pipe relining or targeted repairs for a permanent fix.

You’re responsible for the sewer pipe from your house to the property boundary. Sydney Water is responsible from the boundary to the street main. If the blockage is on your side, it’s your cost. We can help identify where the blockage is located.
