Here’s what actually works, and when it’s worth calling a drain specialist instead.

What Causes a Blocked Sink

The usual culprits are ordinary things washed down the drain every day. In the kitchen it’s food scraps, coffee grounds and grease. In the bathroom it’s hair, soap scum and cotton swabs. In the laundry it’s lint, sand and pet hair.
All of it sticks to the inside of the pipe until the water can’t get past it.

Fix #1: The Plunger

A plunger works on sinks, not just toilets. Cover the drain fully and give it several firm pumps. The suction often shifts whatever’s blocking the pipe.
Keep one in the house for sinks and a separate one for the toilet.

Fix #2: Baking Soda and Vinegar

Pour about half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of vinegar. Cover the drain straight away so the fizzing reaction works inside the pipe instead of escaping.
Leave it for 30 minutes, then flush with hot water. Repeat if the blockage hasn’t cleared.

Fix #3: A Drain Snake or Straightened Wire Hanger

Straighten a wire coat hanger and leave a small hook on one end. Feed it into the drain carefully and pull out whatever’s caught, going slowly so you don’t scratch or damage the pipe.
A plastic drain eel from a hardware store does the same job and is better for pulling out trapped hair.

Fix #4: A Wet and Dry Vacuum

Check your vacuum’s manual before you try this one, it needs to be rated for liquid. Set it to liquid mode, cover any vent, and seal the nozzle firmly over the drain.
The suction can sometimes pull the blockage straight out.

When to Call a Plumber

Not every blockage clears with a plunger and some patience. These are the signs it’s time to call a plumber.

1. Repeated blockages: If the same sink clogs every few weeks, the cause is usually something the DIY fixes can’t reach, like tree roots in the line or damage further down the pipe. A plumber can find the actual cause instead of just clearing the symptom.
2. Multiple drains blocked at once: If more than one sink, the toilet or the shower are all draining slowly, that points to a blockage in the main sewer line, not the sink itself. A CCTV drain inspection shows exactly where the blockage is before anyone digs up anything.
3. A smell that won’t go: If the sink still smells after cleaning, there’s decomposing matter built up further down the pipe than a plunger or drain snake can reach. Hydro jetting clears the full width of the pipe, not just the immediate blockage.
4. DIY hasn’t worked: If you’ve tried the fixes above and the sink is still slow or blocked, it’s time to call a plumber rather than keep pouring chemicals down the drain.

Preventing the Next Blockage

A few habits keep sinks running clear long after the first fix.

1. Use a drain strainer: A cheap strainer or stopper catches food scraps and hair before they go down the pipe.
2. Keep grease out of the sink: Grease is liquid when it’s hot and sets hard once it cools inside the pipe. Let it cool in a jar or carton, then bin it.
3. Flush with hot water monthly: Boil the kettle, add a squirt of dishwashing liquid, and pour it down the drain to help break up grease buildup.
4. Keep wipes and cotton buds out of drains: They don’t break down and are one of the most common causes of blockages we see.
