Clearing A Blocked Sink

If you think you know the reason why your sink is blocking, you can trys these DIY treatments before calling a plumber.

There are a few DIY solutions that you can try to unblock a sink before calling a plumber.

  • Boiling water: This is the easiest method to try first. Boil a pot of water and slowly pour it down the drain. Repeat a few times if necessary. The hot water can help to break up any grease or oil buildup that is causing the blockage.
  • Baking soda and vinegar: Mix 1/3 cup of baking soda with 1/3 cup of vinegar and pour it down the drain. Let it sit for about an hour and then pour hot water down the drain to flush it out. The chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar can help to break up the blockage.
  • Plunger: Use a plunger to create suction and pressure to dislodge the blockage. Make sure to cover the overflow drain (if there is one) with a wet cloth or tape to create a seal.
  • Drain snake: A drain snake, also known as a plumbing snake or auger, can be used to physically remove the blockage. Insert the snake into the drain and twist it to dislodge the blockage. Pull out the snake and repeat if necessary.

If these don’t work – It is time to call a plumber.

The Blocked Drain Guys have the necessary experience and knowledge to perform drain cleaning and clearing services safely and effectively.

Blocked Sink FAQs

Common questions about blocked sinks answered by Sydney plumbers

Slow draining in kitchen sinks is usually caused by a buildup of grease, food scraps, and soap residue in the trap or waste pipe. Over time, these deposits narrow the pipe and restrict water flow. In some cases, the blockage may be further down in your main drainage line, especially if multiple fixtures are affected.

We don’t recommend chemical drain cleaners. They rarely clear the full blockage, can damage older pipes, and create toxic fumes. If used repeatedly, they can corrode pipe joints and seals, leading to leaks. A plumber with the right tools can clear your sink properly without risking your plumbing system.

A blocked sink means the blockage is in the trap directly under the sink or in the short waste pipe leading from it. A blocked drain means the blockage is further down in your main drainage system, often affecting multiple fixtures like toilets, showers, or other sinks. If only one sink is slow, it’s usually localised. If everything backs up, it’s a drain issue.

We charge from $99 for straightforward sink blockages, with a $0 callout fee. Most kitchen and bathroom sink blockages can be cleared quickly with basic tools or a drain snake. If the blockage is deeper in your drainage system or requires camera inspection, we’ll give you an upfront quote before proceeding.

Bad smells from bathroom sinks are usually caused by bacteria growing in the overflow drain or a partially dry P-trap. Hair, soap scum, and toothpaste residue create a breeding ground for odour-causing bacteria. Regular cleaning and running water through all drains keeps the trap sealed and prevents sewer gases from entering your home.

Yes. When a sink is severely blocked, water pressure can build up in the waste pipe or trap, forcing water through weak joints or corroded sections. If you notice water pooling under your sink cabinet, turn off the water supply and call a plumber. Ignoring it can lead to cabinet damage, mould growth, and more expensive repairs.
